Story, highlight, post or reel: saving each one
Your own story: Instagram keeps a copy for you
Start with the easy case. You posted it, so you already own the way out, and no outside site is needed.
Instagram rearranges its furniture without notice, so this page wears a date: the app behaviour described here is pinned to 24 September 2026 (a sentence dated differently trumps this one).
A story of yours runs a full 24 hours, clocked from the upload itself, and then drops into your archive, unless you have switched the archive off. Which people watched it inside that day is covered in Who are these strangers watching my story?
Instagram, in its help page about camera-roll saving, describes two routes for getting your own story onto the phone. We did not walk through these menus ourselves, so take the wording below as theirs:
- Before it goes up. While you are still putting the story together, a Download option at the top of the screen keeps a copy on the phone.
- One story, while it is live. Open it, open its menu and choose the save option. The frame lands in your camera roll. Menus shuffle between app versions. If a button has wandered, that help page is a better guide than a video from last year.
A public story that isn’t yours, file by file
Somebody else’s story is a different job, and this is where the box comes in. Open accounts only, though. Here is the whole routine:
- Drop in the handle. A username works, and so does a profile address copied from a chat.
- Press Open. Three tabs come back. One holds Stories, one Highlights, one Posts.
- Pick the frame. Tap the one item you want. Each frame carries a Save button of its own.
- Press Save. The file lands in the download folder your browser uses.
That is all it takes to save one public story as its own file. One press, one file. No button sweeps up a whole tab, and at no point does a login page pop up.
Your own account isn’t used at any step. Why that counts for something is covered in Watching stories unseen without betting your account.
Some people reach for a screenshot instead. On an account without the paid Plus tier, screenshotting a story does not alert the poster (as of 24 September 2026). Fuller detail, rumours included, sits in Who gets told about a screenshot, and the Plus rumour.
The catch: the story has to be live. Once it drops off the profile, it drops out of the Stories tab here as well. Except when its owner filed it under a highlight: then it lives on in the Highlights tab.
Type by type: what each save gives you
Six kinds of item, six small differences. Here they are in the order the box lays them out, as HushViewer handled them on 24 September 2026. Every file is whatever the source hands over; by source this page means the lookup service outside this site that brings each item to the box.
| Item | How it saves here | What lands in Downloads | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile picture | Tap the round picture in the header, then Save | A small square image | None |
| Grid photo | Posts tab, one Save per card | An image, usually JPEG, sometimes WebP (see the note below) | None |
| Carousel slide | Posts tab; every slide shows as its own card | An image, same as a grid photo | None |
| Reel, shared to the grid | Posts tab, plays like any grid video | MP4 | Included when the clip has it |
| Story, photo | Stories tab, one frame per Save | An image, format set by the source | None, it is a still |
| Story, video | Stories tab, one clip per Save | MP4 | Included when the clip has it |
| Highlight clip | Highlights tab: open the set, save each clip on its own | Image or MP4, same rules as a story | Included when the clip has it |
A still keeps the format it had at the source, so expect a JPEG in most cases and the odd WebP. Video comes as MP4. Any clip recorded with sound keeps it. No watermark is added. Size is the source’s decision, so no resolution is promised here.
Grid photos are the odd ones out. In the September check, five of the sixteen grid photos turned out to be WebP, and every one of the five still wore a .jpg name. The name simply repeats the label the source sends. Story files and highlight files matched their endings without exception. So the tab tells you what to expect: from Posts, a .jpg may really be WebP; from Stories or Highlights, the ending was right every time.
Sound is a question of its own. On r/DataHoarder, in a thread that opened in November 2022, one person put it this way: “is there a way to download the stories/highlights with the songs?” A clip’s own audio travels inside the same MP4. No separate sound file exists. A song added with a music sticker is another matter. Whether it lands in the file depends on how the source serves that clip, so no promise is made about songs. In the same check, five of the six clips carried sound. The sixth, a grid video, arrived with no sound track at all, and whether the original ever had sound is unknown.
Which stories won’t save, whoever asks?
The Save button covers a lot, but not everything. The gaps are fixed.
- Locked accounts. On a locked profile the owner picks who sees posts and stories, one approved follower at a time. HushViewer cannot open one. No viewer alters that rule, this one included. What a stranger still gets on such a profile is mapped in Locked on Instagram: what a stranger actually sees.
- The Tagged tab and the Reels tab. Reels saved here are the ones left on the grid. Tagged photos do not load.
- Close friends’ stories. Those are shared with a list the poster picked by hand, and this box never makes that list.
- Comments and likes. Neither the comment threads nor the list of likers comes along.
- An entire account in one go. Only the most recent posts load, older ones stay out, and each item still needs its own press.
- Yesterday’s story. Same catch as above: gone once it drops off, unless a highlight holds it.
- A date. Items carry no date or age on this page, and the file name carries no date either.
Wrong page, then, for anyone hoping to lift a locked account’s stories or highlights. That door is shut from the outside. A route that claims to open it is after your money or your login.
Reposting a clip that isn’t yours
Saving and reposting sound close. They are not. When in doubt, send the link instead of the file. The poster keeps control, and nobody has to guess.
A file in your downloads folder is a copy for you. It carries no permission to post it again, and asking first or tagging the original account is good manners rather than permission. The clip’s maker still decides what happens to it, and Instagram’s rulebook has its own lines on posting work that another person made.
Keeping, forwarding and reposting each sit differently with the law and the rulebook; the long answer is in Is it legal to watch a story, save it, or pass it on? That page makes no promises about any particular country, and this one makes none either.
Saving questions, answered
How do I save my highlights to my camera roll?
With a public account, type your own handle here, open Highlights and press Save under each clip. Inside the app the route runs through your archive, and this page has not checked those menus.
Can you download your stories from Instagram?
Your own, yes. According to Instagram’s help page, a live story’s menu has a save option, and older ones wait in your archive unless you switched it off. For a public story posted by someone else, this page saves one item per press. Bundles are not offered.
Can I save my Instagram stories to my camera roll?
Yes, one at a time. Instagram’s own camera-roll help article covers a Download option before you post and a save option in a live story’s menu. It describes no automatic switch, and the menus move around from one app version to the next.
How can I download Instagram highlights from a private account?
You cannot, here or anywhere honest. Highlights behind a lock belong to the approved follower list. Nobody else sees them. This box does not open them. A site charging to do it is selling nothing.
How do I save a story somebody else posted?
Public accounts only. Drop that handle in, press Open, then tap Save beneath the Stories frame you want. Each press brings down one file (as of 24 September 2026). A locked account simply does not load.
What about a reel from the Reels tab?
Only reels their owners shared to the grid load here. The Reels tab itself is not one of the three tabs. Those grid reels sit under Posts among the recent items, and each one takes its own Save.
